The Truth About Yelp and Google Reviews.

The Truth About Online Reviews: Why Verification and Evidence Matter

Online reviews can be helpful, but not every review tells the full story. Platforms such as Google and Yelp generally allow people to post reviews without publicly proving that they purchased a product or used the business. That makes it difficult for consumers—and sometimes the business itself—to determine which reviews reflect genuine customer experiences.

As a small, family-owned business, we believe reviews should be connected to real transactions whenever possible. We also believe businesses should be willing to support their responses with evidence rather than simply asking readers to choose one person’s story over another.

The Difference Between Verified and Unverified Reviews

A verified review is associated with an actual purchase or documented customer interaction. An unverified review may still be genuine, but the review platform has not necessarily confirmed that the reviewer placed an order, received a delivery, or contacted the business about the issue being described.

This distinction matters. An unverified review can be posted using a nickname or account that provides the business with too little information to locate the transaction. Without an order number, delivery date, recipient name, or other identifying information, it may be impossible to investigate the complaint or offer an appropriate resolution.

Why Evidence-Based Reviews Matter

We support an evidence-based approach to customer reviews. When a review makes a specific claim, consumers should be able to consider any relevant documentation from both the customer and the business.

Depending on the circumstances, evidence may include:

  • Order and payment records
  • Product or delivery photographs
  • Product weights, quantities, or packing records
  • Delivery confirmations and timestamps
  • Emails or messages exchanged with the customer
  • Replacement, refund, or chargeback documentation

When privacy and confidentiality permit, we are willing to provide supporting evidence for our response to a disputed review. Personal customer information will always be protected or removed. Our goal is not to embarrass a customer or dismiss legitimate criticism. Our goal is to make sure serious claims can be evaluated using facts.

Our Experience With Verified Reviews

Our verified Shopper Approved reviews have consistently reflected a much stronger customer rating than our unverified Yelp profile. The difference does not automatically prove that every unfavorable review is false, but it demonstrates why consumers should consider how reviews are collected and whether an actual purchase has been confirmed.

Legitimate criticism can help us improve, and we do not expect every customer to leave a five-star review. We do, however, believe that reviews should accurately describe what happened and that businesses should have a meaningful opportunity to investigate and respond.

Review Filtering Can Distort the Overall Picture

We have had customers tell us that they submitted positive Yelp reviews that were not prominently displayed or were moved into Yelp’s “not currently recommended” section. Yelp uses its own automated recommendation system to decide which reviews it highlights. Because businesses do not control that system, the publicly displayed rating may not represent every review customers have submitted.

This is another reason consumers should look beyond a single star rating. Read multiple reviews, compare review platforms, check whether purchases are verified, and consider whether the business provides a specific, evidence-based response.

Google Reviews Have Similar Verification Limitations

Google Reviews can provide useful customer feedback, but reviewers are generally not required to publicly submit proof of purchase before posting. A business may therefore receive a review it cannot connect to any identifiable order or customer interaction.

When we cannot locate a reviewer, we may ask for an order number, delivery date, recipient name, or direct contact information. That is not an attempt to avoid responsibility. It is the information we need to determine what happened and make the situation right when a genuine problem occurred.

Purchased Reviews Are a Real Marketplace

Businesses regularly receive unsolicited emails offering to sell five-star reviews. We have received these solicitations ourselves. Their existence demonstrates that purchased-review services actively target businesses, although receiving such an email does not prove that any particular business has used the service.

One solicitation sent to us offered packages of ten five-star reviews for a one-time fee. It claimed that purchased reviews could improve a company’s rating, push negative reviews farther down the page, and help the business “take over the market.” The message specifically offered reviews for platforms including Google, Facebook, and Yelp.

Excerpt from an unsolicited review-sales email received by our business:

“We are selling 10 natural 5-star reviews for $149” and offering placement on Google, Facebook, or Yelp.

We did not request this offer, respond to it, or purchase any reviews. We do not buy positive reviews, and we do not pay anyone to post negative reviews about competitors. We removed the sender’s sales link because we do not want to promote or direct traffic to a service selling artificial reviews.

The important point is not that every positive review is suspicious. Most reviews may be entirely genuine. The point is that consumers should understand that a commercial market for artificial reviews exists, making purchase verification and supporting evidence increasingly important.

How Consumers Can Evaluate Online Reviews

  1. Look for reviews connected to verified purchases.
  2. Read the details instead of relying only on the star rating.
  3. Compare feedback across more than one platform.
  4. Consider whether the business gives a specific and professional response.
  5. Look for photographs, order information, or other supporting evidence when serious claims are made.
  6. Be cautious of sudden clusters of vague reviews using repetitive language.
  7. Remember that one review—positive or negative—may not represent the typical customer experience.

Our Commitment to Transparency

We welcome honest feedback from real customers, including constructive criticism. If we make a mistake, we want the opportunity to investigate it, correct it when possible, and learn from it.

We also believe fairness works both ways. When a public review contains claims that conflict with our records, we reserve the right to respond with relevant documentation. When appropriate and legally permissible, we can provide redacted photographs, order records, correspondence, delivery information, or other evidence supporting our response.

Trust should be based on more than the loudest accusation or the highest star count. It should be based on verified experiences, specific facts, transparent responses, and evidence that consumers can evaluate for themselves.

Conclusion: Look Beyond the Stars

Google and Yelp reviews can be useful, but they should not be treated as unquestionable proof. Consumers deserve to know whether a review came from a verified customer, whether the business could identify the transaction, and whether evidence exists to support or challenge the account.

We encourage customers to read carefully, compare sources, and give greater weight to verified reviews and documented facts. That approach is fairer to consumers, legitimate reviewers, and honest businesses alike.
