Two Types of Dahlia Arrangements

The products on this page include two different styles of floral arrangements:

• Full or primarily dahlia arrangements: These designs use dahlias as the principal flower. They provide extraordinary immediate beauty but generally have a relatively short overall vase life.
• Mixed arrangements featuring dahlias: These designs combine one or more dahlias with roses, lisianthus, calla lilies, hydrangea, spray roses, greenery or other available seasonal flowers. The other flowers may continue blooming after the dahlias have faded.

Important Dahlia Vase-Life Information

Cut dahlias commonly have a vase life of approximately two to five days. Some larger, open or especially delicate varieties may look their best for only two or three days.

Actual vase life cannot be guaranteed. Performance varies according to the individual cultivar, maturity at harvest, weather, transportation, room temperature, water cleanliness and care after delivery.

Dahlias generally do not last as long as carnations, chrysanthemums or many traditional roses. An arrangement made primarily or entirely with dahlias may therefore be unsuitable for a customer whose highest priority is extended vase life.

We explain this openly because customers deserve realistic expectations before ordering a premium seasonal flower.

Why Choose a Mixed Dahlia Arrangement?

A mixed arrangement offers an excellent balance between the immediate beauty of a dahlia and the potentially longer life of complementary flowers.

The dahlia contributes its distinctive shape, color and texture during the first part of the arrangement’s life. When it eventually fades, the recipient can gently remove that individual bloom while continuing to enjoy the remaining flowers.

Mixed dahlia arrangements are often the more practical choice for birthdays, anniversaries, thank-you gifts and everyday flower delivery.

What to Expect From Seasonal Dahlias

Dahlias are agricultural products, and no two harvests are exactly alike. Available flowers may include ball, decorative or other seasonal forms in colors ranging from blush, cream and lavender to bright pink, red, orange, yellow and burgundy.

Exact varieties, colors and sizes shown in product photographs may not always be available. When substitutions are necessary, our designers preserve the intended style, color direction and value while selecting the freshest suitable flowers available.

How to Care for Cut Dahlias

• Keep the arrangement in a cool location away from direct sunlight, heating vents, fireplaces and hot windows.
• Check the water every day. Dahlias can be thirsty flowers, and the vase or container should never be allowed to run dry.
• Refresh the water when the arrangement design allows it.
• Keep foliage above the waterline to help reduce bacterial growth.
• Remove individual dahlias as they fade so the remaining flowers in a mixed arrangement can continue to be enjoyed.
• Keep the arrangement away from ripening fruit and other sources of ethylene gas.
